OK we admit it. In the past Attic Self Storage has been guilty at this time of year of winding people up with promises of cryogenic freezing facilities
, non-existent art shows and other such fantastical nonsense.
We apologise. We only did it for a laugh.
So what's the big joke?
No one knows for sure where the tradition of making people look like fools on April 1st
came from. One popular legend is that it dates back to the late 16th
Century and the introduction of the Gregorian calendar, when the start of the year was moved from the end of March to January 1st
. Those slow folk who didn’t get the news and continued to celebrate the New Year on April 1st
became the butt of jokes and hoaxes.
Historians have also linked April Fools’ Day to the ancient Roman festival of Hilaria, which was celebrated at the end of March and involved people dressing up in disguises. Or perhaps All Fools’ Day is tied to the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, when Mother Nature ‘fools’ people with changing, unpredictable weather.
The funny thing about fake news
In modern times, pranksters have gone to great lengths to create elaborate April Fools’ Day hoaxes. Newspapers, TV channels and Web sites have perpetuated the April 1st tradition of making up outrageous fictional stories to fool their audiences.
In 1957, the BBC famously reported that Italian farmers were experiencing a record spaghetti crop and showed footage of people harvesting strings of pasta from trees: https://youtu.be/tVo_wkxH9dU
Numerous viewers were taken in.
A break with tradition
This year, to make it up to our valued customers and to stand out from the crowd, Attic Self Storage have decided to do something really really surprising for April Fools’ Day.
