The dark days of winter can really start to drag at this time of year, but something brilliant is heading your way. Lumiere 2018 is about to brighten up London’s streets, buildings and public spaces with a free nocturnal festival exhibiting the work of the world’s leading light artists.
From Thursday January 18th until Sunday January 21st, between 5.30pm and 10.30pm every evening, you’ll be genuinely dazzled by the installations on display across the capital.
King’s Cross is one of the main focuses of this extraordinary exhibition in 2018. Great news for the staff and customers at Attic Self Storage on York Way, which is just around the corner from all the electric action.
‘Lampounette’ – Take an evening stroll along King’s Boulevard where a surreal installation of giant sized angle-poise desk lamps will illuminate your way, courtesy of French art studio TILT.
‘Waterlicht’ – Dutch artist Dean Roosengaarde has transformed Granary Square into something weird, watery and wonderful. Flowing light creates a dreamy seascape and you can use your mobile and headphones to let the accompanying soundtrack wash over you. That’s what you call immersive art.
‘Bottle Festoon’ – Hanging over Bagley Walk Viaduct by the canal are a set of twinkling chandeliers handmade from recycled plastic bottles. Carefully constructed by a number of London community groups.
There are more trippy installations to discover around every corner between Central Saint Martins and Gasholder Park:
Wander through a shimmering wheat field made of illuminated flower-like reflectors…walk beneath an ever changing light sculpture which shimmers and splinters in time with its own soundscape…gaze up at colourful watering cans suspended in the air pouring fibre-optic ‘water’ onto the grass below… witness a huge computer animated projection piece flickering on the side of a whole building…circumnavigate a luminous neon birdcage…enter an underground tunnel filled with a pulsating light display inspired by Mother Nature herself.
Stand mesmerized in Pancras Square as an enormous bank of light bulbs pulse and flash in time with specially composed music and remind yourself that you haven’t been eating mushrooms.
The organisers obviously had another light bulb moment when they decided to create a special ‘Kid’s Light Trail’ to keep those up past their bedtime amused.
Accompany your little art lovers as they pick up stickers by visiting Lumiere locations around King’s Cross and then trade them in for free candy floss and a glow band. Get ready for the sugar rush!
Of course there are plenty of places to eat and drink in between all the art installations. There’s a Night Market in Lewis Cubitt Square where you can quaff and gorge to your heart’s content. Street food, hot chocolate, all manner of delicious treats. Soup? Stew? Slice of pizza? Or perhaps you fancy a hot mulled gin from the LUMA pop up bar?
Post your favourite Lumiere photos on Instagram and you could even win a free dinner at the new Granary Square Brasserie, where they’ll be getting in the spirit of things by mixing up their own fluorescent cocktails.
Visit www.kingscross.co.uk for a full Lumiere map and guide and any other details we might have missed in our hurry to post this invite.
If you still crave more electrical wonders, you could always visit our King’s Cross HQ. Not only is Attic Self Storage tastefully illuminated at night, with art on display in our glowing windows, all our internal lighting is automatic and movement sensitive. There’s something rather magical about walking along corridors that switch their energy saving bulbs on ahead of you.
Ah, yes! Lumiere London 2018 is such an inspirational festival it could even make you look at our storage building in a whole new, erm, light!
