The Biggest Day For A Small Business

Will it be Black Friday, Cyber Monday, or that Rainy Wednesday you decided to set up on your own?

There seems to be a day for everything these days. Launch your own business and you can claim one for yourself – there are 365 to choose from. Here are a couple worth remembering:

Black Friday is on the 29th of November this year. Like Halloween and High School Proms it started off as an American tradition which seems to have caught on over here. If you run a shop, or even a stall, it’s a great way to drum up more customers just before Christmas.

The 2nd December sees the return of Cyber Monday which has grown in popularity in recent years. It’s basically the online equivalent of Black Friday and lets smaller retail websites compete with the larger chains. If you’ve got a web business it’s worth remembering that it’s meant to be the busiest internet shopping day of the year. Click, ker-ching.

Oh, and don’t forget Small Business Saturday on the 7th December.

British Home Stores

Over the last decade there has been an enormous rise in online businesses based out of people’s homes. Somewhere around 70% of new businesses in the UK are started at home. All you need is a comfy chair and a white cat and you too can make plans for world domination...

If you’ve got a product or a service that you’re thinking about taking to market, the most convenient place to build your prototype, test things out, cook up the first batch, stitch things together and package everything up has to be your kitchen, spare room, or basement.

Remember Jeff Bezos started his little idea for something called Amazon in his own garage. Who’s to say you can’t build something equally game changing from the privacy of your shed.

Beauty & The Biz

For example, there are literally loads of businesses that have set up selling online beauty products. Whether you’re importing herbal remedies from China and selling them on at a profit, or creating your own range of organic avocado face creams hand-crafted in your bath, the possibilities for creating a beautiful business are endless.

Laser razors, chocolate toothpaste, luminous make-up, 3D eyebrow printers, tanning soap, quinoa lip balm, pre-sliced cucumber eye patches. Bring your wildest ideas to life and the world wide web will help you find a market for them.

You’re The Boss

With the drift away from long-term careers and the increasing lack of job security it’s hardly any wonder that so many people want to take their lives (and wages) into their own hands and run their own companies. There’s something remarkably liberating about working for yourself.

And there’s no shortage of British businesses that have built up thriving worldwide markets from humble homespun beginnings – Tangle Teezer Hairbrushes, Brompton Bicycles, Cambridge Satchel Company, Songkick, Photobox, King of Shaves, Northern Dough Company, Kiddyum, Mr Singh’s Sauce, Toddlebikes, GymLuxe, and Jollies Socks to name just a dozen.

If you have enough passion, not even Brex**it can hold you back.

Ready, Steady, Grow

Bags taking over room

Working from home is fine in the short term, but what happens if your business really takes off and the big orders start flooding in? Will your home become a warehouse for cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, sticky labels and airmail envelopes? How much space will you need for stock?
