Local information for East Ham
Until the 19th century the main occupation of East Ham was agriculture. The industrial development of East Ham commenced in the 1870s with the opening of the Beckton gas works and ancillary works making chemical products. The other main industry was the docks and the area of East Ham incorporated much of The Royal Albert Dock opened in 1855. Education was always given priority in East Ham and the “Quakers” set up a school in the 17th century. In 1923 East Ham made history by returning Susan Lawrence to parliament, one of the earliest female Labour MPs.
East Ham has been voted as one of the worse places to live in London, and has a high level of child poverty. The area has many boarded up shop fronts, as a result of the 2007 financial crash, and although improvements have been made, it is slow going. It is also in the middle of a huge £3.7 billion redevelopment scheme which includes Custom House and Canning Town.
