Local information for Kentish Town
The district’s name probably originated from a man called Kentish as opposed to the county of Kent. The original settlement was a development on the road to Highgate, and then moved northwards to its current location. Nowadays, Kentish Town is part of the borough of Camden and is a half way house between the energetic raucous atmosphere of Camden Market and the up market areas of Hampstead and Highgate.
It was once a shabby area of North West London, now it has good restaurants and renovated period houses, and excellent transport links. However, some businesses in the area are threatened with closure as the area is gentrified. Although the local community is very motivated to keep the high street full of traditional shops.
The area is trendy and has been used as a filming location for movies and shows, such as About a Boy. There are also some top class music venues, such as The Forum, which hosts new and old acts.
It is close to Central London and the West End, and open areas such as Parliament Hill and Hampstead Heath. There are several leisure facilities, gyms, and tennis courts at Parliament Hill.
The roads contain mostly Victorian properties whose architecture range from large 4 storey townhouses to pretty coloured 2 storey terraces.
Hampstead along with Kentish Town was rated by the Sunday Times, as one of the best places to live in North West London.
