Information about Mile End
Originally known as the hamlet of Mile End Old Town, it contained several establishments for helping the poor in the neighbourhood. After complaints about the misuse of funds, a new Workhouse was set up in 1803, which was hopelessly overcrowded with 284 residents. In 1846, the second model housing estate of the Metropolitan Association for improving the Dwellings of the Industrious Classes was built in Mile End New Town. It consisted of flats, houses and cottages, and was the early model for many municipal and Council flats.
Currently, there are many regeneration schemes in progress as new life is being breathed into the old council estates and the area is once again a thriving community. One particular scheme converted the former Mile End Primary School, a listed building, into appartments for modern living. The original entrance opens into the main hallway which leads to a formal central space with a 20m high glazed atrium, served by a glass walled lift and staircase. The complex contains luxury penthouses, and various residences with split level flooring and double height ceilings. The developers have designed open plan living for the old granite building.
