Information about Shoreditch

The first two London theatres were built in Shoreditch, as it was just outside the city walls and plays were not allowed to be performed within the walls. The first was called “The Theatre” and it was set up in 1576 as James Burbage, the head of the Earl of Leicester’s company of players, needed a permanent base. The “Curtain Theatre” soon followed. The first play by Shakespeare was performed in Shoreditch.

South Shoreditch became the centre of the furniture trade in the Victorian era, no doubt helped by the opening of the Regents Canal in 1820 which made transportation much easier.

Nowadays, Shoreditch is well known for its street food, fashion, and night clubs, and it is still a very lively area, one that produces a demand for self storage from both businesses and residential customers. The “Shoreditch Triangle”, which incorporates Shoreditch High Street, Great Eastern Street and the Eastern most point of Old Street has become an international centre of the art world, and is home to many musicians, designers, and filmmakers.

Housing can be expensive, and loft conversions have been turned into studio flats, although there are some affordable multi share housing schemes in the area. So if you are thinking of moving to Shoreditch, and will need self storage, get a quote for our Bow, or Kings Cross storage facility.
