Information about Wapping

Wapping was originally a Saxon settlement and was meadow and garden ground until it was acquired for the London Docks. In 1798 the river police were founded in order to stop the thieves on and around the river.

In the mid 18th century there were 36 taverns in Wapping and some of them were frequented by Charles Dickens while writing and seeking inspiration for his novels. The area also attracted many famous artists, and the docks at Wapping feature in several well known paintings.

The Wapping project is home to a contemporary arts, performance and restaurant centre, set in a one-time hydraulic power station. Wiltons Music Hall also offers a range of diverse theatrical productions, music, comedy, cinema and cabaret in a Grand old Music Hall.

Wapping’s oldest pub named The Prospect of Whitby, previously the Devil’s Tavern, dates back to 1520, when it used to be a regular meeting place for smugglers, pirates, and sailors.

The area was almost destroyed during World War II, but was rebuilt soon after, but some cobbled streets around historic pubs are still present. The area contains many warehouses and factories that have been converted into trendy apartments. There are also some modern glass fronted riverside developments with views of the river and Tower Bridge,  or Canary Wharf. Many Wapping residents walk to work in the City or walk across Tower Bridge for other entertainment.
